LIVING AT BANKHOUSE

Tonic@Bankhouse is a retirement community comprising of 84 apartments over 14 floors, located on Albert Embankment in the iconic area of Vauxhall, Lambeth. Tonic owns 19 of these one and two bed apartments for Shared Ownership sale and for rent. The building is shared with Riverside, a social landlord, who have 59 rental apartments and 6 shared ownership apartments. Care Outlook provides the personal care and support services on-site, including the 24/7 emergency call system.

Bankhouse was designed as a retirement community by architects Foster + Partners and consists of high-quality one and two bedroom self contained apartments, many with balconies with stunning views. Bankhouse also has community spaces to meet with other people, a bar and restaurant, a community lounge overlooking the River Thames, a floating garden and a roof terrace with incredible views of central London, an overnight guest suite, a laundry room and bike storage. All areas of the building are fully accessible to wheelchair users.

Tonic has created a unique offering of housing with care, that celebrates LGBTQ+ identities with the community at the very heart of their homes. We co-create events and activities with residents based on their interests, including collaborations with other LGBTQ+ organisations and support providers. We provide accommodation and safe social spaces where older LGBTQ+ people are supported, gain life affirming social connections and access culturally appropriate services.

Rather than just being “LGBTQ+ friendly” our services are actively affirming of the lives, histories, needs and desires of LGBTQ+ people. This does not imply exclusion of those who do not identify as LGBTQ+, but actively values those who respect and celebrate LGBTQ+ people.

What is a retirement community?

Retirement Communities combine high quality housing options for older people with tailored support services. They allow residents to rent or own a property to maintain their privacy and independence, with the reassurance of 24-hour on-site staff, communal facilities, and optional care and support as needed.

Retirement communities may also be referred to as, extra care housing, housing-with-care, assisted or independent living or retirement villages.

Why Not Now

Our residents at Tonic@Bankhouse teamed-up with QUEERCIRCLE, artist Kit Green and Napier Films, to create two short films that explore their feelings and thoughts about getting older and deciding to move into the UK's first LGBT+ affirming retirement community. Enjoy!

TONIC HOUSING AND ARCO

In May 2022, we received our ARCO (Associated Retirement Community Operators) Approved Operator status.

Tonic@Bankhouse is our first retirement community and as an Approved Operator, we aim to comply with the ARCO Consumer Code, which sets standards for the retirement community sector.

It helps ensure that we provide a trusted, fair and high-quality service to those living in, and considering moving to, our retirement community. For more details please visit arcouk.org/arco-consumer-code.
